Though it had been some time since anyone had tried it—as I recall, before my stint in “the big house”—Benteen thought she knew what was happening.

Still, she decided to confirm it.

“Are you making a pass at me, Ensign?”

King smiled… and Erika had to admit that there was considerable charm, and wattage, behind the expression.

“Actually...” and he leaned closer, “…it’s Brett.”

Her lips curled upward in a demure smile…

“Actually…”

…that became a humorless grin.

“…no. It’s Ensign.”

His grin soured slightly… and he, both literally and figuratively, fell back.

“Then, n–no… I’m not.”
