The battle ended suddenly.
“They are signaling, Captain. Their surviving officer wishes to discuss
a possible surrender.”
Despite the exultation that swept through them, Roman discipline held.
Aldus was pleased, but wary: Talarians were
notorious for striking colors… and then striking.
“Do not relax your vigilance,” he ordered. “Maintain current readiness.
“Accept the hail.”
Their opponent sat his command chair with pride, despite a shattered
bridge and a broken body—a human body.
“Jono ta Endar
requests terms.”
Aldus considered.
“You must relinquish your weapons, but you may retain your command… and
your honor.”
Jono’s nod was grudging… but
grateful.
